I like real interaction!!!

The article I read that Jason wrote gave me more of an understanding of what an open source software program really is. I have to say it can be very useful and beneficial in the classroom; however it does have that one issue. It is only provided in English which in my opinion is not very “open”. This program only benefits those who speak English and excludes all the rest. Although it is very interesting that the internet was written in English, I think it is unfortunate that others who speak a different language are at a major disadvantage. Learning about Tuxpaint was much better considering it is aimed for a variety of people and it also offers a variety of cool tools that children can use. However, I still have a small biased towards computers. I feel strongly that a real crayon and paper is much better for a child to be creative with. I also feel that reading a book and having conversations with people face to face, has a much more positive affect. Maybe it’s just me, I think it’s true. Don’t get me wrong, I think the use of computers is important, I just don’t think it should be all that matters. We need to encourage children to interact with their peers and to be active, and I just don’t think that good software programs can offer you the benefits that real life interaction does.

I agree with you Annette, I feel that children will benefit more from hands on experience, but once they have that the computer could be an addition only. Children need to have more interactions with people then machine and only use the computer to be an addition to enhance their skills not the only source though! The computer can be fun and children need to learn all aspects, so I feel they will need to learn to be computer savy because many jobs and schools expect children to know how to use the computer in their future.
